the hivida songs
mexico
Background:
Named after the Mexican sounding intro! This song was written
about times in life when you need to be able to look in the
mirror and answer to yourself honestly; then share that with
your loved ones. Too many of us carry shitloads of baggage
- no need!
Lyrics:
There comes a time when leaves will fall
Look for a sign writing on the wall
I draw a line a mark in the sand
Mean what you say make sure you take a stand
I was longing for you sweet baby
Seek the light in your darkest day
There'll come a time in life you'll lose your way
Look for a sign, it is in yourself
Hear the truth that I'm here to tell
I was longing for you sweet baby
There comes a time, a warning call
To you and me everybody one and all
Don't try to hide the mistakes you made
Apologise! Forgiveness in his name
I was loving you sweet baby ...

stampy
Background:
Orginally this song was supposed to be about Barry Sutherland
(Bazzy Bu) buying an ornament of a wooden elephant during
an ill-fated shopping trip. Robbie and James tried to write
lyrics around that theme but it never quite worked. That awkward
feel was taken on into the final lyrics about the flirting
and non-verbal messages we give off to each other. There should've
been trumpet on this song but we were so rushed during the
recording we clean forgot to record it.
Lyrics:
I go out scanning around
Eyes meet, for a second
Hold your gaze for longer than is
Socially accepted
And I feel the rush, can't help but blush
Breathe in a deep breath
All fingers and thumbs thinking what is to be done
As I take my first step
Try a smile
Now is the time, for the right impression
Hold your gaze for longer than is
Normal in our situation
Feel the rush I know that I must
Seize my only chance
Now my moment has come and I've been struck dumb
Will I have the last dance?
Feel the rush I know that I must
Seize my only chance
Now my moment has come and I've been struck dumb
I won't have the last dance
I'm all fingers and thumbs thinking what's to
be done
How did it come to this?
Now as I sit on my own I wonder and know
How did I love myself?

fear
Background:
This is one of the band's favourite songs on the album -
the lyrics wordplay with "fear" and "feel".
Lyrics:
She is Amazing!
Her kiss sensation
Running over the roads that lead into
Dark places in my heart
Find a glimmering light, a spark
Until the fear comes again, into my soul
I feel the fear
She is Amazing!
Her eyes fixed staring
Coursing through the high and bye ways
That lead into my heart
Breaking all resistance apart
Until the fear comes again
And my soul forever end
She is Amazing
Our love gives me Reason
Not to fear and love again
And my hope soars and then I
Feel yes I feel and my hope soars again

christine
Background:
Written way back in 1991. The title was influenced by a Julian
Cope song "pristine". Whilst the girl is fictitious, "long
drawn silences" are surely one of the worst aspects of any
relationship!
Lyrics:
I was a nomad
Lost in the sand
Held a life
In my hand
The morning after
Still In my head
Oh baby wont you
Can't you understand that ...
All I want, Is that I need
And our love is bigger than you or me
And I bang my drum for you to hear
Christine
Our worlds are fading
Far away now
God knows where
But I bet your there
With your long drawn silence
You know I couldn't bear
Oh yes I'm so cruel
To have ever told the truth about you
Oh yes and I'm such a fool
To have ever fallen in love with you
Christine

time to listen
Background:
Another old song. James Henry snr has always had a love of
Django Rhinehart and I suppose some of the influences were
drawn on for this song. Don't you just luuurv the trumpet
playing on this track! "It's getting harder"
- discuss ...
Lyrics:
If you ever took the time to listen
It would be something
But it's getting harder
Getting harder every day
If you ever opened up those
Dark and deep brown eyes
If you ever opened up those eyes
It would be a surprise
It's getting harder
Getting harder everyday
Well I wanted you all for myself
Took all I got without any help
I kept her oh so close to my heart
I aint never ever gonna let it fall apart

i come around
Background:
This is the first song that we worked on from conception
as a band.
It's alternative title is "the man who didn't know who to
trust". We all probably know of someone like the character
depicted in this song: the heart and soul of the party, great
with a drink in but not able to face the reality when sobriety
(and reality) kicks in.
Lyrics:
I come around to your way of thinking
I must've been kindo dumb!
How many times am I the last one drinking?
Drink until I reach the bottom
Take me home tonight
Cause I'm too tired to listen
Need to rest my weary head
Now baby afore the sun will rise
I'll blow a kiss and leave you
For what is gained and what is lost
He was the man who didn't know who to trust
Show me the bar what are you all drinking?
Is it brandy whisky or rum?
Liquor in my blood I'll tell you my life story
About a boy with wanderlust
Who avoided love at all costs
He was the man who didn't know who to trust.

murder mystery
Background:
Tells its own story. Written in Lerwick circa 1991 on a hellish
night of gales and rain.
Lyrics:
Late in the evening as the lights were turned down low
A storm raged and crashed like no one had heard before
And the rain fell like the bang bang banging of a big bass
drum
With a howling wind and a fear that tinged that hardest man's
soul
Minutes turned to hours and the storm from band to worse
Eerie stares from those who knew the most
The mystery of the murder who did it? Where? and when?
And the tension grew as everyone looked to the detective for
a clue
Cautiously at first he stalked around the room thinking what
would be his next move
Clearing his throat he finally said that Brendan Murphy was
shot dead
By a callous act that I'll unearth for you
First comes Miss Mary with her lover together sharing in
the plot brewed
From the mind of Dr Jekyll now Mr Hide
Then comes Professor Blake who had the most of all at stake
Cause he pulled the trigger that killed Murphy and sealed
his own fate
So I rest my case I seek nobody's praise, it was a
well written script
Now I've played bit by bit
Bit by bit And it was all been down to you! And a clue ...

northern lights
Background:
Or the "merrie dancers". The lyrics in this song are dedicated
to Bertie Thomson, Robbie's Dad, who was taken from us much
too soon. The night Bertie died was alive with merrie dancers.
Somehow we all knew he was up there.
Lyrics:
See your Northern lights
From a distant shore
Time to say goodnight
Lay rest his good soul
Hope our heads up high
Gaze towards the stars
Let all the tears we cry
Ease the pain inside
And the sun it sets upon my weary head
And the sail and his soul are falling now let him go ...
Walk with me my father hand in hand my son
We'll watch the merrie dancers dip behind the moon
One day we'll be free from this mortal coil
Till then be in peace my friends shimmer aside the moon

beautiful day
Background:
Written in Quarff, Shetland circa 2001; originally played
by the Big Thrill (James and Shetland musicians Russell Gair,
Bernard Smith and the ubiquitous Stevie Hook!).
Lyrics:
I walk by your side hold your hand in my hand
Oot by the western road the sun goes down ower the voe
The breeze through your hair lifts and drops like a wave
On your shore I sigh I smile I turn to you and I say
What a beautiful day! What a beautiful day ...
Come back from the edge give your self a fighting chance
What is life without love or hope? You can't ever give
up
So glad that you're here to believe that she's
with me
And I turn and say you're my lover you're my best
friend
What a beautiful day! What a beautiful day to fall ...

e-groove
Background:
A song to display the trumpet talents of Chuck. Lovely cheesy
lyrics - "Lord save my lost soul and heal my blues"!!
Lyrics:
Come back baby we had it so good
Mistakes I've been making like some lovesick fool
She saw me straying off the beaten track
Games I've been playing are tearing us apart
Without you home I've been up all night
But I can't help loving you
So complicated but she's simple and true!
Lord save my lost soul and heal my blues
I was up can't sleep all night but I was still loving you

story teller
Background:
Written circa 1993. Everyone loves storytellers but not ones
that are boastful and deceptive and aren't able to listen.
Lyrics:
I tell you a story again and again
You love the beginning but I never reach the end
Will we ever be together?
Or are we just like ships in stormy weather?
I open my story book always searching to find
You say you've seen a saviour while I still beg for
a sign
Will we ever be together or are we just like ships in stormy
weather?

everything that goes around
Background:
Treat others well and sometime the favour will be repaid;
equally, slight someone and watch your back!
Lyrics:
Everything that goes around has gotta come around
Sometime honey
I gotta go home find my way back to where I belong
Everything you thought was right just might be wrong
With a little know how honey
I gotta go home find my way back to where I belong
Don't you know that I
I want to fly somewhere up in the sky
And oh so it goes everything just ebbs and flows
But you and I we gotta take a chance on what we don't
know
